Command Sgt. Maj. Gerardo Moran was born in Puebla, Mexico, and migrated with his family to Los Angeles when he was 4 years old. He graduated from John C. Fremont High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 6, 1997. He attended basic combat training and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he earned the military occupational specialty of 88M (motor transport operator).
Command Sgt. Maj. Moran has served in the United States, South Korea and Italy, and deployed to Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.
His first assignment was with the 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he served as a motor transport operator and supported troop movement for all infantry schools. His second duty station was Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he served with the 513th Transportation Company. He deployed to Iraq twice with the 513th in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He continued his career in South Korea, serving in Foxtrot Company, 302nd Brigade Support Battalion. He was then assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served with the 546th Transportation Company, 126th Transportation Battalion; XVIII Airborne Corps NCO Academy; and Delta, Alpha and Echo companies of the 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. During his time at Fort Bragg, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
He later served in Vicenza, Italy, with U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, G-4, as a transportation supervisor and operations sergeant. He returned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he served with the 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command and the 5th Security Force Assistance Brigade as a transportation sergeant and first sergeant.
Command Sgt. Maj. Moran was selected to attend the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command at Fort Bragg, where he served as the support operations sergeant major.
Throughout his career, he has held positions as a team leader, squad leader, platoon sergeant, first sergeant, instructor, operations sergeant and transportation supervisor.
His military education includes the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, Senior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Basic Leader Course, Airborne School, Air Assault Course, Combatives Levels I and II, Combat Lifesaver Course, Equal Opportunity Course, Jumpmaster Course, Master Driver Course (M9), and the Joint Operation Planning and Execution System Course.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Army Achievement Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster. He also holds the Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and Driver’s Badge.
Command Sgt. Maj. Moran is married to Giovanna Moran. They have four children: Anthony, Gerardo, Alejandra and Melissa.
